Lucid dreaming Flashcards
What is a lucid dream
- occurs when a person is asleep but aware that they are dreaming
- a person can take control of their dreams narrative
- term was coined by Eeden 1913
LaBerge et al 1981
verified lucid dreaming through volitional communication
PFC and lucid dreams
PFC - involved in lucid dreaming and metacognition
Stumbrys 2013
studied PFC invovlement in lucid dreaming using tDCS
tDCS
transcranial direct current stimulation, used to manipulate the activation of the DLPFC
Stumbrys 2013 results
according to the participants self ratings, tDCS over the DLPFC during REm sleep increased lucidity in dreams
Filevich 2015
explored metacogntive mechanisms in lucid dreaming
Filevich 2015 results
showed shared neural systems between lucid dreaming and meta-cognitive function, in particular in the domain of thought monitoring
narcolepsy
sleep disorder with high propensity for lucid dreaming
Dodet 2015
found that narcoleptics have a high propensity for lucid dreaming without differing in REM sleep characteristics from people without narcolepsy
Blagrove and Hartnell 2000
lucid dreaming is associated with trait creativity, need for cognition and internal lOC
lucid nightmares
occurrence of distressing dreams despite being aware in a dream
lucid dream fragility
- rareness of lucid dreams due to fragile meta-cognition
- may also be rare due to personality
Konkoly 2021
illustrates how experimenters can question lucid dreamers during ongoing dreams and ask whether the more extended two-way communication during lucid REM sleep dreaming is feasible
Konkoly 2021 - study that was published in current biology
- scientists gave the dreamers math problems
- one sleeping Ps responded correctly by moving eyes the amount of times
- there was 36 dreamers
- over 158 attempts
- responded correctly a 5th of the time
- only wrong 3% of the time
