Methods of Training

OFF THE JOB

A

Off the Job Training

  1. provides more opportunities to focus on and practice specific job elements, provide supplimental information, and to use professional trainers.
    1. Negatives: low trainee motivation, restricted transfer of training, and higher cost due to not being on the job.
    2. lectures, conferences, computer assisted instruction, bestibule training, and behavioral modeling.
    3. Vestibule Training: physical replication or simulation of the work environment and is useful when on the job training would be too costly or expensive!
    4. **Behavioral Modeling: **Bandura’s social cognitive theory, which proposes that learning is facilitated when a person observes a skilled worker perform the target behavior and is then provided with opportunities to practice the behavior.

A

BANDURA

  1. Social Cognitive Theory/Behavioral modeling
    1. modeling is most effective in organizations when it utilizes a guided mastery approach that consists of 3 components:
      1. modeling of the appropriate skills by the trainer
      2. guided skill mastery (role-playing in a simulated work environment with instructive feedback)
      3. self-directed application of newly acquired skills on the job.
