employee’s cognitive, affective and evaluative reactions to his job.
80-90% say they are satisfied
many worker characteristics and job factors are associated with job satisfaction.

- Disposition: job satisfaction is an enduring disposition. genetic contribution as well, up to 30% of variability in scores looking at twins.
- Age: inconsistent results. most find positive linear relationship, but others are U shaped with younger workers satisfactions decline and then rebound with age.

Race/Ethnicity: not consistent results. But:
- compared to whites, minorities report lower levels of overall job satisfaction with most marked difference between blacks and whites.

Gender: mixed results as well,.
- some women experience lower satisfaction because they feel exploited by their jobs, are in lower level jobs, paid less for equal work.
- **Occupational Level: **Satisfaction increases as occupational level increases. duh!
- Life Satisfaction: positive correlation between job satisfaction and life satisfaction. but nature of relationship is unclear.

- opportunities to use skills and abilities
- supported!
- organization’s financial stability
- relationship with immediate supervisor
- compensation/pay
- inconclusive, may be more about fairness and equitability than actual pay.
Effects of Job Satisfaction
consequences of job satisfaction:
- Performance: positive relationship, but weak. .14-.30 correlation that one impacts the other.
- Turnover, Absenteeism, Tardiness: job dissatisfaction has been linked to high rates of turnover, absenteeism and tardiness. Strongest link between satisfaction and turnover (.40).
- **Physical and Mental Health: **job satisfaction was a bettest predictor of longevity than either physical health or tabacco use.
- consistent link between job satisfaction to both physical and mental health.
- job dissatisfaction moderately related to physical illness and more strongly related to mental/psychological problems i.e. burnout, low self-esteem, depression, and anxiety.

Organizational Commitment
strength of an employee’s psychological attachment to an organization.
3 types of committment by worker to organization:
- Affective committment: worker’s identification with, emotional attachment to, and involvement in the organization.
- **Continuance Commitment: **worker’s perceptions regarding the social and monetary costs of leaving the organization.
- **Normative Commitment: **worker’s sense of obligation to remain with the organization because they believes it is the right thing to do.
Of the 3, Affective commitment is found to be the most consistently related to a variety of factors including: turnover, absenteeism, organizational citizenship behavior, job performance, personal stress and work-family conflict.
Continuance Commitment: appears to be associated only with turnover.
Overall Organizational Commitment similar across genders and races/ethnicities.
