Teachers bound by GDPR, have duty of care for kids, so won’t share data about their kids with researchers.
Explain how Overworked is a problem with researching teachers?
- Overworked means they may be less cooperative
- Restricts data that can be gathered.
Explain how Fear is a problem with researching teachers?
Unlikely to be critical of the school, due to fear they may lose job.
Explain how Gatekeepers is a problem with researching teachers?
> Gatekeepers choose kids researchers can get data from, possibly selecting well behaved students.
> Heads and other leadership, may act as ‘gatekeepers’, restricting info and areas you can go, classes, you can observe.
What may be the best area to research teachers?
- Staffroom likely to be backstage, where teachers more offguard and relaxed.
- So can gather their true opinions, more valid data, but issue of access.

Explain how Power is a problem with researching pupils?
- Less power than adults, so hard for kids to state views openly.
- As schools are hierarchies, they’re scared they might get in trouble.
Explain how Reluctancy is a problem with researching pupils?
Reluctant to open up to researchers, as they’re not used to interacting with adults other than parents and teachers.
Explain how Speech Codes is a problem with researching pupils?
Speech codes may be a barrier to gaining trust from certain groups of students e.g. Gangs.
Explain how Informed Consent is a problem with researching pupils?
Young kids can’t fully understand purpose of research, so not possible to get full informed consent.
