metals, nonmetals, metalloids, transition metals (unit 3) Flashcards
alkali metals
highly reactive
group 1 (expect hydrogen)
alkaline earth metals
group 2
reactive, but less than alkali metals
transition metals
groups 3-12
metalloids
B
Si
Ge, As
Sb, Te
Po
halogens
group 17
highly reactive because they only have to gain one electron to become full
noble gasses
group 18
not reactive because their outermost energy shell is completely full
what is the relationship between valence electrons and group number?
the group number is the number of valence electron for group 1,2 and 13-18
why are H and He separated from their groups?
He has two protons, so it could be next to H(1), but its outermost shell is full (2 e-), so it is a noble gas
H could be a halogen because it is highly reactive (has to gain one to become full), but it could gain or lose 1 to become stable
