Metals and hydrochloric acid Flashcards

1
Q

Magnesium and dilute hydrochloric acid

A
  • very vigorous
  • the mixture gets very hot
  • a colourless solution of magnesium chloride is formed

Q

Aluminium and dilute hydrochloric acid

A
  • slow to start reacting

- there is a strong layer of aluminium oxide that stops the acid getting to the metal

Zinc and iron

A
  • react slowly in the cold, but more rapidly on heating

- it is less vigorous than aluminium

Q

how to find the approximate position of a metal in the reactivity series (cold water)

A

add some to cold water

if there is any rapid reaction, it must be above magnesium in the reactivity series

Q

dilute hydrochloric acid

A

add some of the mmetal to some dilute hydrochloric
acid. I there ist any reaction in the cold, warm it up
If there is still no reaction, the metal is probably below hydrogen
