Metals and hydrochloric acid Flashcards
1
Q
Magnesium and dilute hydrochloric acid
A
- very vigorous
- the mixture gets very hot
- a colourless solution of magnesium chloride is formed
2
Q
Aluminium and dilute hydrochloric acid
A
- slow to start reacting
- there is a strong layer of aluminium oxide that stops the acid getting to the metal
3
Q
Zinc and iron
A
- react slowly in the cold, but more rapidly on heating
- it is less vigorous than aluminium
4
Q
how to find the approximate position of a metal in the reactivity series (cold water)
A
add some to cold water
if there is any rapid reaction, it must be above magnesium in the reactivity series
5
Q
dilute hydrochloric acid
A
add some of the mmetal to some dilute hydrochloric
acid. I there ist any reaction in the cold, warm it up
If there is still no reaction, the metal is probably below hydrogen
