Metals Flashcards
What are metals?
Metals are elements that are good conductors of heat and electricity
What are the six physical properties of metals?
They are luster, malleable, ductile, good conductors of heat and electricity, solids, (except mercury).
What does malleable and ductile mean?
Malleable means that it can be hammered into thin foil, and ductile means it can be drawn into wires.
What are some examples of metals?
Aluminium, copper, iron, tin, gold, lead, silver, titanium, uranium, and zinc.
What does luster mean?
Shiny and reflective
What does corrosion mean?
The deterioration of a metal due to a chemical reaction. (Rusting)
What is the chemical property of metals?
Corrosion and reactivity
What are the groups of metals?
Alkali, Alkaline, Transition, mixed groups, lanthanides, and actinides.
What are Alkali metals?
Alkali metals are metals in group 1. They are the most reactive metals. They are also shiny, soft, low density, and low melting point.
What are Alkaline Metals?
Alkaline metals are metals in group 2. They are reactive, harder than alkali metals, denser than alkali metals, and have a high melting point.
What are transition metals?
Transition metals are from groups 3 - 12. They are less reactive than alkaline and alkaline metals. They also have all the physical properties of metals.
What are metals in mixed groups?
Metals in mixed groups are from groups 13 - 16. Some examples are lead, and tin
What are lanthanides?
An example of Lanthanides is neodymium, and it is used for surgery, and cutting metals.
What are actinides?
Actinides are metals that are mostly man made.
What are transuranium metals?
Transumanium metals, are metals that are made by nuclear particles crashing to one another. They are also the elements that follow uranium.
