Metallic Bonding and Properties of Metals Flashcards
What is a metallic bond?
the force of attraction between closely backed positively charged electrons and the sea of valence electrons
Why are metals good conductors of electricity and heat?
the valence electrons in a metal can move freely resulting in being a good conductor of electricity and heat
What are alloys?
a mixture of elements where there is at least one metal
What’s the difference between alloy and a normal metal?
improved properties such as being stronger and less reactive
What are the two different types of alloys?
substitutional and interstitial
What is substitutional alloy?
in a subsitutional alloy, the combination of the metal and other element (or also metal) means that the other element will replace certain atoms of the metals in the alloy
What is interstitial alloy?
in an interstitial alloy, small holes are formed in the metallic crystal and filled with atoms of the other element
