Ionic Bonds Flashcards
What are ions?
Ions are atoms that have an electric charge, either positive or negative.
What happens when an ion loses an electron?
The ion becomes positive
What happens when an ion gains an electron?
The ion becomes negative
What is an ionic bond?
electrostatic forces that hold oppositely charged ions
What state of matter are ions compounds in room temperature?
Solid
Do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points?
Yes
Do ionic compounds conduct electricity?
Only in water, or melted, not solid
What do you call positively charged ions?
Cations
What do you call negatively charged ions?
Anions
What is the transfer of electrons in ionic bonds?
complete transfer of electrons from metal to non metal
What is an electrolyte?
an ionic compound that conducts an electric current in it’s liquid form
What is a crystal lattice?
a 3D arrangement of particles
What is lattice energy?
the energy needed to separate 1 mol of ions of an ionic compound
What is the relation between latice energy and force of attraction?
the greater the lattice energy, the stronger the force of attraction
What are factors that affect lattice energy?
size of the ions and charge of the ions
