Halogens Flashcards
What are the four halogens?
Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, Iodine,
What are the characteristics of Halogens?
electronegative, very reactive, low melting point and boiling point
What happens when you move up group 17?
reactivity increase as you go up
What color is fluorine?
yellow
What color is chlorine?
green
What color is bromine?
Orange/ red
What color is Iodine?
when solid it’s grey-black but when vapourized it’s purple
What is the name of halogens + hydrogen gas
hydrogen halides
What happens when hydrogen mixes with fluorine?
reacts explosively even in cool, dark conditions
What happens when hydrogen mixes with Chlorine?
reacts explosively in sunlight
What happens when hydrogen mixes with Bromine?
reacts slowly on heating
What happens when hydrogen mixes with Iodine?
Forms an equilibrium mixture on heating
What is it called when halogens + alkali
salts, or metal halides are formed
What is single displacement reactions of halogens?
when a halogen is kicked out by another more reactive halogen in a reaction
What is hydrochloric acid?
a solution composed of water molecules and hydrogen chloride
What is hydrogen chloride?
a gas that is made up of hydrogen and chlorine bonded by a single bond
What happens when alkali reacts with hydrochloric acid?
the metal will replaec the hydrogen to produce metal chloride + hydrogen gas
What are some uses of chlorine?
purification of water, bleaching
What are some uses of Iodine?
antiseptic substance
How are some ways we test for chlorine gas?
chocking smell, turns damnp blue litmus paper to red and then white.
