Name 4 temporary fixings for metals
- Nuts and bolts
- Screws
- Clips
- Brackets
What is welding and when is it used?
When a rod is heated to a very high temperature and melted to join metal pieces together permanently
What is soldering and when is it used?
Soldering is similar to welding but instead melts metals with lower melting points and is used on circuit boards and when joining copper pipes
What is brazing and examples when is it used?
When brass is melted to join metals together. Brazing is slower than welding but that makes it safer and a great way to learn about joining metals with heat.
What are the properties of mild steel
- High strength
- easily machined
- malleable
- ductile
- low cost of production
What are 5 types of metal finishes?
- Anodising
- Galvanising
- Plastic coating (heat)
- Powder coating (electrostatic)
- Paint
What does anodising do?
Anodising is a completely non-toxic electrolytic coating method which enhances the properties of a metal by making it more durable and corrosion resistant.
Any paint added in this process is very durable too and will not peal.
What is galvanising?
Type of anodising where steel or iron is dipped into molten zinc which causes a metallurgical reaction which creates a coat of zinc to protect it from rusting and corroding.
This can be done at high volumes and produces an aesthetically pleasing finish.
What is plastic coating?
When small plastic pellets are heated so become molten and metal is dipped it to create a coloured protective layer
What is a powder coating?
When fine particles of plastic become attracted to an electrically charged piece of metal and they create an even coating that is very aesthetically pleasing and offers protection against corrosion
