What are the 2 forms of IP protection that are automatic?

A

Copyright
Prevents others from copying, distributing or recreating your work. It applies for music, software, films, illustrations, photos. Lasts at least 50 years and 25 years for photos.

Design right
Protects design for 10 years after it was sold from being directly copied (shape and configuration) but not if someone slightly modified it.

What are the 3 forms of IP protection that you have to apply for?

A

Registered design
Extra step to design right to improve protection to cover appearance, shape, configuration and decoration. Lasts for 25 years.

Patent
Protects a new invention and you can take legal action against anyone who makes or sells without permission. It has to be new, possible to make and different enough to other designs Lasts up to 20 years with renewal.

Trademarks
Protects brand, company or service. Allows you to take legal action against anyone using the brand without permission, use ® (registered trademark) symbol and sell/ license your brand.
