A2 Design strategies Flashcards
What is reverse engineering?
When you disassemble a product to find out how it works and how you can improve it.
What is disassembly?
When you take an existing product apart to determine construction methods, materials used, processes and functions
What is DfD?
Designing for disassembly is when you design a product for it to be taken apart which makes it easier to maintain and recycle.
What is the iterative design process?
When ideas are designed and tested and then refined a number of times. Weak ideas are dropped and you are left with a high quality product
What is inversion?
A design strategy where a problem is turned around to approach from a different angle or what else might a product do.
E.g. Instead of making a desk bigger how can you maximise the space on a desk.
What is morphological analysis?
When a problem is split into many smaller problems that can be addressed individually and thoroughly.
What is analogy in product design?
When a designer applies a known solution to a similar problem or new idea.
E.g. adding a rubber handle to a pan to prevent burning
What is lateral thinking?
Opposite of analogy when a designer takes a completely new approach to a known problem.
e.g. Dyson’s bagless vacuum
What is reverse engineering?
When an existing product or device is deconstructed to see how it functions and processes used to construct it. They can see why it was so successful, why users liked the competitors product and what can be done to improve it.
