Metals Flashcards
what are common properties of transition metals?
- can from stable ions in different oxidation states
- often used as catalysts
-often from coloured compounds
-unreactive
reactivity trend down the group for transition metals?
reactivity increases
as the outer most e- are easier to remove
how are most metals extracted?
reaction with o2 to form an oxide
if these are less reactive than carbon they can release metal in a redox reaction - cheap
however if more reactive they will require electrolysis - expensive
what is a displacement reaction?
when a less reactive metal is replaced in a compound by the more reactive metal
how can we know if the metals will react with acids?
if metals are above hydrogen in the reactivity series
what is an alloy and how is it beneficial?
combination of two or more metals to combine properties
means layers can slide over therefore increasing strength of metal
what is malleable?
can be easily shaped
what is ductile?
can be stretched to form wires
uses of Aluminium?
soft and malleable
drink cans
alloyed Al more stronger and used in aerospace industry
uses of iron?
soft
can form steel or stainless steel with anti rusting properties
knives
uses of gold?
electric circuits as its a good conductor, corrosion resistant and malleable
jewellary
uses of silver?
electronics
antimicrobial action for medicine adn sports
jewellary
uses of copper?
wires easily conducts electricity
water pipes as its not very reactive
heaters - good conductor
uses of titanium?
aerospace and defence industries
temperature resistant material
