Acid,Bases and Salts Flashcards
what is an acid?
substance that can donate H+ ions
what does a metal + acid produce?
salt + hydrogen (thus efferevesence will be seen)
this is a redox reaction
what does a metal carbonate + acid produce?
salt+water + co2
this is a neutralisation reaction
what does metal hydroxides + acids form?
salt + h20
this is a neutralisation reaction
what does metaloxide + acid form?
salt and water
neutralisation reaction
what is a strong acid?
undergoes full dissociation in water
what is a weak acid?
acid that only slightly dissociates
carboxylic acids are weak acids
higher conc. of H+ ions means?
lower pH and more acidic the solution is
What is the difference between a change of 1 in the pH scale?
a factor of 10
what are mono,di,tri protic acids
one mole of substance being able to donate more than one mole of H+
eg: diprotic acids like sulfuric acid can donate 2 acidic H+ per acid molecule
What is a base?
substance that can accept H+ ions or has the ability to form OH- ions
what type of reaction occurs when an acid reacts with a base?
neutralisation
what type of reaction is neutralisation?
exothermic - releases heat to surroundings
