Metallic structure - magnesium Flashcards
Where do metallic bonding occur?
pure metals and alloys
What is metallic structure?
a regular lattice of cations surrounded by delocalised electrons
why does group 1 have a 1+ charge?
they give 1 electron per ion
Why do metals have high melting points?
Due to strong electrostatic attractions.
What happens to the electrostatic ions across a period?
increase due to higher charge on ions
Down a group?
Decrease down a group due to increased shielding.
How do metals conduct electricity
Delocalised electrons free to carry a charge
How do they conduct heat?
delocalised electrons quickly transfer energy.
How are they malleable/ductile
delocalised electrons are able to move with the ions when moved. They maintain the non-directional electrostatic attractions and hold the shape.
