kinetics - maxwell distribution curves Flashcards
What does the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution curve show?
Shows the distribution of the energies and the activation energy
What graph does this show and explain
Temperature :
-Higher propoertion of the particles possess the minimum amount of energy to cause a chemical reaction
- curve flattens and the peak shifts to the right (if increased)
What does this curve show?
Catalysts
- provide alternative reaction pathway
-reduces the activation energy needed to create a chemical resction
- more particles will overcome the minimum Ea , increase in successful collisions and increase ROR
What does this curve show?
Reduce volume (pressure)
-number of particles stay the same but the particles are forced closer together maeanong more successful collisions and therefore increased ROR.
-no change to diagram
What does this curve show
Reduction in temperature:
- less particles with Ea
- graph shifts to left with lower EMP
- graph is more steep
- less successful collisions
How does the reaction continue to work when most molecules have a lower energy than Ea?
Reactions still continue to undergo chemical reactions because the innerective collisions can cause them to go above the Ea eventually , they will gain energy
Why does a small increase in temperature lead to a large increase in the ROR ?
More particles will have an energy breather than or equal to Ea.
Greater proportion of frequency of collisions
ROR increases
