Macromolecular - carbon Flashcards
How many carbon bonds in diamond?
4
What shape is diamond?
Tetrahedral
what structure does it form?
3D lattice of solid carbon
Why is diamond very hard?
Structure of the strong c-c covalent bonds
Why does it have a high MP?
The strong c-c bonds require lots of energy to break
does diamond conduct electricity?
No because all the electrons are involved in bonding. There are no delocalised electrons
Why are diamonds insoluble?
strong c-c bonds
How many bonds does carbon make in graphite?
3 single covalent bonds with 3 other c atoms.
The fourth electron is delocalised.
what structure does it have?
Trigonal planar (120 degrees)
Forms a 3d hexagonal structure
why is graphite soft?
Weak VDW forces so layers are able to slide over eachother
Why does Graphite have a high melting point.
Strong c-c covalent bonds require more energy to break
Does graphite conduct electricity and why?
yes because of the delocalised electrons which can carry a charge/current
Why is graphite insoluble?
Due to strong c-c bonds
