ionic bonding Flashcards
what is ionic bonding?
electrostatic attraction between opoositely charged ions (in a lattice)
What do the positiveand negative electrons do?
Positiv e cation loses an elecron
the negative anion gains the electron
They are not shared!
How does ionic bonding work?
-The giving atom loses a valence electron so it has a full valence shell but a positive charge.
-The gaining atom gains a valence electron so that it has a full valence shell but a negative charge.
-The negatively and positively charged ions are attracted to nechother base on their opposite charge.
What is electrostatic attraction?
-holds positive and negative ions together - very strong.
When atoms are held tg in a lattice its called ionic bonding.
What is a crystal pattern
every ion is attracted to all other ions with the opposite charge.
High melting point?
Many strng forces of attraction between +ve and -ve ions making it hard to break.
conductivity
when dissolved. in water, molten, ionic compounds conduct electricity
In a GIL there are no delocalised electrons and ions are solid so cant conduct electricity.
