Metallic Bonds Flashcards
1
Q
where do metallic bonds occur
A
between metal atoms
2
Q
what happens in a metallic bond
A
metal nuclei are packed together with the valence electrons that are free to move among all the nuclei. These free valence electrons hold the metallic structure together.
3
Q
what are some properties of a metallic compound
A
- Metals canconduct electricity well due to their sea of delocalised electrons that are free to move.
- Metalsconduct heat well because the nuclei are packed together closely, allowing energy to be transferred easily.
- Metals aredense because of the tightly-packed nuclei.
- Metals mostly havehigh melting points because the nuclei that are tightly packed together indicate strong forces between the nuclei, making us need more energy to overcome the forces between the particles
4
Q
What are the valance electrons
A
these are the electrons in the outermost electron shell of an atom.
5
Q
what number of valance electrons do different groups have
A
Groups 1 - 3 have thesame number that corresponds to the group number
Group 13 have3 valence electrons
Group 14 has4 valence electrons
Group 15 has5 valence electron’s
