Boyle's law Flashcards
what is Boyle’s law
The pressure of an enclosed gas is inversely proportional to the volume it occupies at constant temperature.
higher pressure = lower volume
lower pressure = higher volume
what happens when you compress gas
As the volume decreases as you compress a gas then the pressure will increase. This happens because now that the particles are closer togethers so they have more collisions and as the number of collisions increases so does the pressure.
what does it mean by ‘enclosed gas’
the amount of gas or the number of moles remains constant. Let’s look at some concepts that you should have dealt with in Grade 10.
what is mole
themoleis the SI unit for amount of substance.
what is One Mole
One moleis the amount of substance having the same number of particles as there are atoms
12 g carbon-12.
what is One Mole
One moleis the amount of substance having the same number of particles as there are atoms
12 g carbon-12.
what is Avogadro’s number
the number of elementary particles per mole of a substance.
It is equal to 6,022×1023mol-1and is expressed as the symbol NA
