Metallic Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Metallic Bonding
A
The electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons.
2
Q
Properties of Metals
A
- Shiny
- High Melting Points - due to strong electrostatic
attractions. - Good conductors - mobile electrons can carry charge.
- High Density
- Malleable - layers can slide over each other.
3
Q
Structure of a Metal
A
Organised layers/rows of positive metal ions that have lost electrons to achieve a full outer shell. The abandoned, delocalised electrons move freely through the metal, which is why we say that the ions are in a sea of electrons.
The electrostatic attraction between the negative electrons and the positive metal ions is the metallic bond.
4
Q
Alloy
A
A combination of two metals - disrupts the regularly arranged layers of a pure metal, and due to the differentiating sizes of the two different metal atoms, the alloy is a harder substance.
