Ionic Bonding Flashcards
Negative Ion
Anion
Positive Ion
Cation
What kind of atoms?
Bonds between non-metals and metals e.g. Lithium Fluoride; Calcium Chloride
Metal atoms…
lose electrons and become positive ions.
Non-metal atoms…
gain electrons and become negative ions.
Giant Ionic Lattices
Made up of alternate negative and positive ions.
Electrostatic attraction in Giant Ionic Lattices
Very strong electrostatic forces between ions - high boiling and melting points. Requires a lot of energy to break bonds. The structure maximises attraction and minimises repulsion.
Electricity?
Solid ionic substances do not conduct electricity as the ions are immobile and thus not free to carry charge.
When molten or dissolved they do as the ions become mobile and can carry charge.
