Why may you need to replace the anode during the electrolysis of Aluminium Oxide?

A

The anode is made of graphite (allotrope of carbon) when the reaction gets very hot (it is molten afterall), the oxygen begins to react with the carbon of the anode forming carbon dioxide and diffusing into the air.
