Hydrocarbons Intro and ALKANES Flashcards
Crude oil is a fossil fuel. How is it formed?
It was formed over millions of years from the remains of plankton. It is a form of biomass i.e. a resource made from living or recently living creatures.
Crude oil is finite which means that we cannot
replace it if we use it up
Crude oil is a mixture of
hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons are:
compounds containing hydrogen and carbon only
What is a homologous series
chemicals that have the same functional group and the same ratio but go up by CH2 each time
Alkanes are hydrocarbons which are _______ and have the general formula of ____________
saturated (only single covalent bonds)
CnH2n+2
Anagram for alkanes
Monkeys Eat Peanut Butter
Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane
In order of amount of carbon atoms - so methane has 1
we can use the formula CnH2n+2 to find hydrogen atoms
What affects the property of an alkane?
the length of it’s carbon chain
Small Chain vs Long Chain Alkane: boiling point
small = lower
long = higher
Small Chain vs Long Chain Alkane: flammability
small = more flammable
long = less flammable
Small Chain vs Long Chain Alkane:viscosity
small = less viscous (runny)
long = more viscous (thick and gloopy)
The bigger the alkane molecule, the stronger the
intermolecular forces because there are more electrons.
