Metallic bonding Flashcards
How do metals bond?
By metallic bonding
What is the structure of metallic bonding?
Giant metallic lattice in which the electrons in the outer shells of the metal atom are free to move
What is the process of metallic bonding?
Atoms loses outer electrons, and they are not donated to another atom but stay in the area around the metal atom
What does metallic bonding end up with?
Due to the thousands of metal atoms all in the same position, you end up with a block of metal made up of positive metal ions surrounded by all the electrons they’ve lost from their outer shells
What is the name for the electrons that surround the positive metal ions
Delocalised electrons
What holds all the positive metal ions together?
Their attraction to the delocalised electrons
How are the high melting and boiling points in a metal explained?
The attractions between the positive metal ions and electrons are numerous so requires a lot of energy to break these bonds
How is malleability explained in metals?
Because the attraction between the metal ions and electrons are strong but not fixed so when pressure is applied the ions can slide other one another without breaking the bonds
How can the conductivity of metals be explained?
As a current is applied across a piece of metal the negative electrons are attracted towards the positive terminal and because they’re not fixed in positions they can flow across the structure carrying the current through the metal
What are the properties of a pure metal?
High melting and boiling points and malleability/softness
