Metal Structure, Bonding and Properties Flashcards
1
Q
what are the two components of the structure of a metal?
A
- a lattice of positive metal ions - each have their usual charges
- a sea of delocalised electrons - lost by the metal ions, and they move freely through the lattice
2
Q
what is metal bonding?
A
the electrostatic attraction between the positive metal ions and the negative delocalised electrons
3
Q
is metal bonding a weak attraction?
A
no, it is usually very strong
4
Q
three properties of metals?
A
- they have high melting points
- they conduct electricity
- they are malleable
5
Q
why do metals have high melting points?
A
the metallic bonding is usually very strong, so lots of energy is needed to break it
6
Q
why do metals conduct electricity?
A
the delocalised electrons are free to move through the lattice
7
Q
why are metals malleable?
A
the layers of metal ions can slide over each other
