Acid + Base Reaction Flashcards
1
Q
what is the word equation for the reaction when bases react with acid?
A
acid + base -> salt + water
2
Q
what happens to the base in an acid + base reaction?
A
the base disappears - this is because its used up in the reaction
3
Q
what happens if a salt is soluble in the acid + base reaction?
A
it will dissolve into the water to form a salt solution
4
Q
method to make salt crystals (zinc sulphate)
A
- add excess base (ZnO) to hot acid (H2SO4) - this makes the salt solution (ZnSO4) quickly and ensures all the acid is used up
- filter out the excess base (ZnO) - the salt solution (ZnSO4) is the filtrate and is collected in an evaporating basin
- heat the salt solution (ZnSO4) until crystals start to form around the edges - this saturates the solution so that crystals form most efficiently
- leave the salt solution to crystallise - evaporation of water allows crystals to form
