Addition Polymers Flashcards
1
Q
how does an addition polymer form?
A
when molecules with a C=C double bond add into chains?
2
Q
what are monomers?
A
small molecules that add together
3
Q
what are polymers?
A
long chain that small molecules form when added together
4
Q
what is a repeating unit?
A
- something that can represent an addition polymer
- the little ‘n’ represents the number of repeats in the polymer chain
- this is usually a very big number
5
Q
how do you know the name of an addition polymer?
A
- it is former by putting ‘poly’ in front of the monomer name
- e.g. ethene would be polyethene
6
Q
what are the uses of polyethene?
A
- drink bottles
- shopping bags
7
Q
what are the uses of polypropene?
A
- storage boxes
- climbing ropes
8
Q
what are the uses of polychloroethene?
A
- wire insulation
- drainpipes
9
Q
what are the uses of polytetrafluoroethene?
A
- non stick coating
10
Q
addition polymers are inert - what does this mean?
A
they are chemically unreactive, which means that don’t break down very easily
11
Q
what are the four disposal methods of addition polymers?
A
- reuse it
- recycle it - allows it to be reshaped for another use
- incinerate it - use the energy released to generate electricity
- chuck it into landfill
