How do you harden medium and high carbon steel?

A

done through heating it to pre-determined temperature and quenching it water or special oil
makes steel harder but makes it prone to splintering and shattering as it is brittle

A

hard blade capable of cutting through steel
pointed tang which goes into the handle is much thinner and needs to be tougher and less brittle to cope with the force being applied without snapping

A

tempering

heat the required area of the steel back up to a specific temperature between 200-300 and quenching it again

How does a depth stop work?

A

can be found on most pillar drills and can also be fitted onto the drill bit itself
depth of the hole required is set on the gauge tested once to check that the correct depth has been set and then all holes will be correct depth
