Q

What social issues are there in the design and manufacture of products?

A

consumers want to know the Provence of their product
so the designers need to know where the material comes from & where it was originally sourced from to see what the conditions are like and then they can be sold as ethically sourced and produced goods

Q

What are the ecological issues in design and manufacture?

A

you have to think about once you have used the earth resource what will happen to it so you have to design products efficiently

15
Q

What is the process of slash and burn?

A

1) Tress are felled and set alight

2) ash gives soil nutrients for a short time and crops are grown or cattle is grazed

16
Q

What is the problem with slash and burn?

A

once the forest is gone it does not forest back
wildlife loses habitat and become extinctic
and rate of extinction increase as forest are destroyed

17
Q

What is the problem with deforestation?

A

Counties that still have forests view forests as a raw material that can be sold (commodity) and sell it to wealthier nations making the timber be exported and most of its food and animals raised on the new lands

18
Q

What is desertification?

A

this is when the rainforest becomes diminished and becomes dry and have very little rainfall meaning it can no longer be used to support vegetation

19
Q

Why is mining essential?

A

to gather the primary materials and minerals required to supply manufacturing

20
Q

What negative effects does undermining have?

A

Undermining had less of an impact visually dangerous and can lead to instability on the surface causing subsidence and sinkholes

21
Q

What negative effects does surface mining have?

A

tends to scar the landscape and increase the loss of habitat for wildlife

22
Q

Why does mining produce a lot of co2?

A

Because the materials are mined transported and proceeded into products

23
Q

Describe drilling

A

borehole is drilled into earth crust
less dramatic then mining but large storage areas or pipelines are needed to store or transport the fuel to where it needs to be refined

24
Q

What does farming cause?

A

creates about 15% of greenhouse gases some from crops mainly from livestock
produce food efficiently for a growing population
areas are being used to grow plants that are used to make biofuels

25
Q

What are biofuels?

A

carbon neutral they absorb co2 will they grow converting it to carbohydrate and water by photosynthesis
co2 releases when biofuel is burned for fuel or compost as biodegradable products when disposed of

26
Q

What is the purpose of Life Cycle Assessment?

A

companies will use it to estimate their co2 emissions for a product from cradle to grave
and help them ho to reduce total distance travelled

27
Q

Why is it better to buy local produce?

A

reduces product miles & co2 emissions
support jobs i
increase investments in local economy

28
Q

Why is plastic a problem?

A

does not degrade for a long time

sea creatures and birds ingest it causing death

29
Q

What cases pollution?

A

human activity transportation heating and energy production
