Metabolism Flashcards
1
Q
It means…
A
The total of all chemical processes that takes place in the body. Eg. Digestive system
For metabolism to be efficient, it requires oxygen and nutrients (water, vitamins, minerals, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates)
2
Q
The nutrients..
A
- water. Fluid in which other substances are dissolved in
- minerals. May be part of enzymes, be co enzymes or be part of ATP
- vitamins. Act as co- enzymes for many chemical reactions of metabolism
- lipids. Includes fats and oils. Important energy source. Lipids are broken down into fatty acids and glycerol.glycerol enters the glycolysis receptor on the fluid mosaic model. Is broken down to release energy (like glucose
- carbohydrates. Main source of energy in cell. Simple carbs eg. Sugar used in respiration. Complex carbs eg. Starch broken into simple carbs.
- proteins. organic compounds formed by amino acids. Enzymes control chemical reactions in the body.
