Metabolism 7-11 Flashcards
what are the excitatory primary neurones? what is their function?
neuropeptide Y (NPY) and Agouti-related peptide (AgRP) promotes hunger
what is the inhibitory primary neurone? what do they do?
POMC which goes on to release neurotransmitters a-MSH and ß-endorphin
they promote satiety
where do the primary neurones project onto? where are they located?
project onto secondary neurones in the satiety centre, located in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus
name a hormone that is released from the gut to the hypothalamus which stimulates appetite
ghrelin
peptide hormone released from stomach wall when empty
stimulates excitatory primary neurones (NPY & AgRP) therefore stimulating appetite
full stomach inhibits ghrelin release
name a hormone released from the gut to the hypothalamus which suppresses appetite
PYY
released by cells in the ileum & colon (after feeding)
inhibit excitatory primary neurones (suppress appetite)
