ToB - connective tissue Flashcards
what is connective tissue
tissues that connects, supports, binds or separates other tissues or organs, mesodermally derived, made up of cells, extracellular fibres and ground substances
what are cells within CT?
fibroblasts
macrophage
mast cells
adipose
what is the function of fibroblasts?
secrete ground substance and fibres e.g. (pro)collagen
what is the function of macrophage?
phagocytosis and antigen presenting
what is the function of mast cells?
granules which contain histamine (also heparin and chemoattractants)
what is the function of adipose tissue cells
lipid droplet / droplets in BAT with a cell
what is within the extracellular matrix of CT?
ground substances and fibres
what is within ground substance?
hyaluronate proteoglycan aggregates with GAG (glycosaminoglycan) units - is negative so attracts water to form a jelly
what is within fibres?
collagen & reticular elastic
what are the classifications of connective tissue proper (regular)?
loose (or aerolar) CT dense CT (regular or irregular)
what are the different types of specialised CT?
adipose, blood (ECM is liquid), cartilage, bone, lymphatic tissue, haemopoietic tissue
what are the classifications of CT?
- dense regular
- dense irregular
- loose CT
- aerolar CT
what is dense regular CT? example?
closely packed fibres that run uni-directionally to give good tensile strength e.g. tendons
what is dense irregular CT? example?
closely packed fibres that run multi-directionally to allow for multidirectional force
e.g. dermis of skin
what is loose CT? where is it found?
forms framework around structures
high ratio of ground substance : extracellular fibres
e.g. adipose tissue
