Metabolism Flashcards
Metabolism
- body preforms chemical reactions to stay alive
- all these reactions together are metbolism
- has catabolic and anabolic reactions
Catabolic
the breakdown of materials in an organism
anabolic
building complex molecules from simpler ones
converting glaucous into gylcogen
energy for animals
- Not all types of living things require the same amount of energy
- endothermic animals and entothermic
endothermic anaimls
- mammals/birds
- need more energy to main body temp
- constant internal body temp
entothermic anaimls
- reptiles
- less energy demands
- can not survive in cold climates
- do not need to eat frequently
- proportional/same to ambient temp (outside temp)
Effects on metbolism
body size
physical acvicty
age
Heredity Factors
sex
disease
Effects on metbolism: Body size
- the more larger a body is, the more energy it needs
- the more cells a person as= more celular respiration= more metbolism/energy
Effects on metbolism: physcial activity
- muscle needs more energy than fat, so active people need more enrgy
Effects on metbolism: age
- metabolism decreases with age
Effects on metbolism: sex
- typically males are larger in size and have more muslce making them have more enrgy needs
Effects on metbolism: Heredity Factors
- some people have naturally high or low metablic rate
Effects on metbolism: disease
- thyroid diease can increase or disease metabolism
BMR
The amount of enrgy you need at rest
- basal metabolic rate
used to calucate
healthy lifestyles
you need to have a balnce bwteen:
what you are eating
how much you are eating
how much physcial actvity you do
Measuring Energy Burned
measuring energy is measuered using jole (J)
this is very small so we measure using kJ
food energy is measured using calories (kilocalories)
