It is the sum of all the chemical reactions that take place within an organism.

These reactions involve growth, movement, maintenance of a constant internal state, repair, response to stimuli and reproduction

Each of these changes requires that energy is released or absorbed.

Energy conversions
What is metabolism necessary for? What does this help maintain?
It is necessary to control the chemical and energy requirements of a cell.
By doing this, metabolism maintains a balanced internal state (called homeostasis) within an organism
