Metabolic Pathways Flashcards
What are metabolic pathways controlled by?
Enzymes
The two types of reactions within metabolic pathways are
Anabolic & Catabolic
What type of reaction build up small molecules into large molecules?
Anabolic reaction
What type of reaction break down large molecules into small molecules?
Catabolic reaction
Anabolic reactions require
energy
Catabolic reactions release
energy
What is induced fit?
When the shape of an enzyme’s active site changes shape to better fit the substrate.
Substrates have high affinity for
the active site
Products leave the active site because they have a
low affinity
A competitive inhibitor binds
at the active site (which prevents the substrate from binding)
Competitive inhibition can be reversed by
increasing substrate concentration
A non-competitive inhibitor binds
away from the active site (but changes the shape of the active site which prevents the substrate from binding)
Feedback inhibition works when
an end-product reaches a critical concentration and inhibits an earlier enzyme (blocking the metabolic pathway)
