Cell division & Differentiation Flashcards
Cellular Differentiation is
the process by which cells become specialised by expressing certain genes to produce proteins for that type of cell
Pluripotent cells are
Embryonic stem cells that differentiate into all cell types
Multipotent cells are
Tissue stem cells that can only differentiate into a limited number of cell types found in that tissue
Bone marrow cells can differentiate into
red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets
A therapeutic use of stem cells is
corneal repair or the regeneration of damaged skin
How are stem cells used as model cells?
To study how diseases develop or to use for drug testing
What are the ethical issues with using stem cells?
Embryos are destroyed
What are somatic cells?
Normal body cells (that are not involved in reproduction)
What are germline cells?
Gametes and the stem cells that divide to form gametes
How do somatic cells divide?
By Mitosis
How many chromosomes do diploid cells have?
46 (23 pairs)
How do germline cells divide?
By Mitosis and Meiosis
How many chromosomes do haploid cells have?
23
