Mental Imagery Flashcards
Mental Chronometry
determining the amount of time needed to carry out various cognitive tasks. (Shepard and Metzler)
Tacit knowledge explanation
Subjects unconsciously use knowledge about the world in making judgments. (Pylyshyn)
Mental walk task
Subjects imagined walking toward their mental image of an animal, estimate how far away they were when the image filled the visual field. (Kosslyn) subjects had to move closer for small animals than for larger animals. Images = spatial
Patient M.G.S.
Removal of part of right occipital lobe, mental walk task affected (size of visual field reduced)
R.M. and C.K.
R.M. - damage to occipital and parietal lobes. Able to recognize objects and draw accurate pictures of objects in front of him, but unable to draw objects from memory.
C.K. -could not visually recognize objects (visual agnosia), but could draw objects from memory.
Method of Loci
Method in which things to be remembered are placed at different locations in a mental image of a spatial layout.
Peg-word technique
Associating items with concrete words, used for remembering item order in a list.
Boundary Extension
When storing visual scenes in memory we store more than we actually see. When reconstructing the scene, we reconstruct more on the edges.
