Describe asylums as a treatment for mental illness.
Those with mental illnesses were hidden away due to stigma and social shame, eventually being sent to asylums. These individuals were abused, neglected and treated like animals.
Describe lobotomies as a treatment for mental illness.
Lobotomies are a surgical procedure in which a sharpened tool is drilled into the skull to severe connections between the frontal lobe and the rest of the brain. They were seen as very controversial and could cause seizures, lethargy, changes in personality and incontinence.
What is CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and what does it focus on?
Cognitive behavioural therapy is a form of talk therapy which focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. CBT teaches patients to identify negative thinking patterns, challenge them and then actively replace them with positive ones.
What are SSRI’s and what do they do?
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are the most common type of medication. They slow down the release of positive emotions, including serotonin so that its effects are felt for longer.
What is the DSM-5 and it’s purpose?
The Diagnostic Statistical Manual-5 is a classification of mental disorders used by mental health professionals to diagnose mental illness.
