Mental Health
the ability to respond to stressors in socially acceptably ways
Mental Illness
a disturbance in the ability to respond to stressors in socially acceptable ways
Developmental disability
a condition impacting a person intellectually, physically and or emotionally that begins prior to birth or during childhood or adolescence.
It may not be recognized until adulthood in some cases. This type of disability lasts throughout life,
although a person may learn to cope and adapt.
Anxiety disorders
a condition is classified as an anxiety disorder only when anxiety is the defining feature.
Anxiety may express itself in many ways and conditions include generalized anxiety disorders, phobias, panic and PTSD. Some include OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) under anxiety disorders.
Panic is the most severe form of anxiety and may result in catastrophic reactions to perceived circumstances or threats.

Sleep disorders
interfere with the ability to sleep.
These include insomnia (difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep), sleep apnea, narcolepsy and more. When a person does not get enough sleep, they may become confused or irritable, resulting in a loss of daily functioning ability.
Eating disorders
anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa are the 2 most commonly know. Anorexia involves not eating, while bulimia involves binging and purging. Both result in extreme weight loss
Schizophrenia (4 main symptoms)
4 main symptoms include delusions (false beliefs), hallucinations (sensing something not there), psychosis (a break from reality) and paranoia (unrealistic fear). Do not challenge a persons different perceptions.
Addiction
dependence on a substance or activity that results withdrawal symptoms upon cessation.
Mood Disorders
Depression and Bipolar Disease are the 2 most common ones. In bipolar disease a person has periods of depression alternating with periods of mania (euphoria). Depression is common in older adults, possibly due to loss (loss of independence, loss of income, loss of purpose, loss of loved ones….). A person who is depressed may feel tired all of the time but not sleep well, they may be agitated and ignore personal needs such as hygiene, grooming and eating.
Developmental disabilities
cerebral palsy (motor disorder), autism, ADHD, fetal alcohol syndrome, Down Syndrome (an extra chromosome 21), spina bifida (a congenital abnormality of the spinal cord), intellectual disability, epilepsy (seizures, but does not cause any learning difficulty) and more.
