To understand about the menstrual cycle.
What is the menstrual cycle?
During a period, the lining of the uterus breaks down and a small amount of blood passes out.
When does a menstrual cycle start?
Usually 11-12 years but some start sooner, some start later.
What is a menopause?
When the ovaries stop releasing eggs which is also the end of periods.
On average at what age does a menopause start?
On average 45-55 years old but not everyone
What is ‘ovulation’?
Ovulation is when an egg is released from its ovary and is ready to be fertilized.
Why are hormones an important part of the menstrual cycle?
They send chemical messages to the brain which then sends a message to the ovaries to release an egg.
What TWO hormones are produced by the ovaries?
- ) Oestrogen (mostly female)
2. ) Progesterone (mostly male)
What is fertilisation?
When an egg or ova gets fertilized by a sperm.
What is implantation?
When the fertilized egg or ova attaches itself to the lining of the uterus.
When is a women fertile?
Usually between 11-15th day of their cycle.
What is classed as day one of the menstrual cycle?
It is the first day a woman gets her period.
The menstrual cycle is divided into four phases. Name the four phases and describe what happens at each stage.
- Menstruation - blood and fragments of the uterus lining leave the body. Days 1-5 usually.
- Repair phrase - a new uterus grows. Days 6 - 16 usually.
- Receptive phrase - the uterus is ready to receive a new egg. Days 16-21 usually.
- Pre-menstrual phrase - the uterus lining begins to break up.
When in the menstrual cycle does ovulation occur?
Usually half way. The exact day will depend on the cycle length. The average cycle is 28 days so half way would be on day 14.
