How does the cap / diaphragm work?
The cap / diaphragm is inserted into the vagina before sex and covers the cervix to stop any sperm from entering the womb via the cervix.
How long does a cap / diaphragm have to be kept in place for after sex?
It has to be kept in place for at least 6 hours after sex. After that time, you take out the cap / diaphragm and wash it they’re reusable. They come in different sizes and must be fitted for the correct size by a trained nurse or doctor.
What is a cap / diaphragm?
A contraceptive cap or a diaphragm is a circular dome made of thin, soft latex (rubber) or silicone.
How effective is a cap / diaphragm?
92-96% effective. This means that between 4 and 8 women out of every 100 who uses a cap / diaphragm will become pregnant in one year.
State two advantages of using the cap/diaphragm.
- There are no serious health risks, you only have to think about it when you have sex.
- You can put them in several hours before having sex.
What is the combined pill?
the combined pill is a tablet containing hormones that stop you from getting pregnant. the combined pill contains hormones oestrogen and progestogen . these are synthetic versions of the hormones that are naturally releases from your ovaries.
How does the combined pill work?
You take the pill every day for 21 days, then stop for seven days. During that week, you have a period type bleed. After seven days, you start taking the pill again. The hormones prevent your ovaries from releasing an egg (ovulating). They also make it difficult for sperm to reach an egg or for an egg to implant in the lining of the womb.
How effective is the pill?
99% effective.
What are the advantages of the combined pill?
- The pill is for everyone.
- Makes the bleeding lighter, regular and less painful.
- Suitable for healthy, non-smokers.
- Protects against some cancers.
What are the disadvantages of the combined pill?
Side effects which include headaches, increased blood pressure, spotting is common.
