What is a family?
A family is a group of people who live together or who are related by marriage or blood.

A couple who live together who are not married.
What is a nuclear family?

What is a reconstituted family?

Give at least three reasons why a family is important?
To provide love and security, warmth and shelter, food, guidance, opportunities to learn and develop and social interaction.
What is role- reversal?
Where tasks typically done by men are now done by women and visa versa.
Give at least three reasons why family structures have changed over the last 30 years.
Divorce laws are simpler; cohabitation is now socially acceptable; women can choose to have a career rather than having a family or have children later in life; changes in lifestyles affect when people choose to marry; there are more benefits and social support available for lone parents.
Give three reasons why a child may be taken into Local Authority care.
Neglect - need to be provided with adequate food, clothing and shelter; Abuse - for protection and safety; Deceased parents - no one to provide care for them; Behaviour issues - parents may not be able to care for the child; Financial issues - parents may not be able to afford to care for the child; Parental Health issues - so cannot look after the child.
What is the difference between emergency care, voluntary care and compulsory care?
Emergency care - when the child will be removed from the home in an emergency to allow the LA to investigate e.g. suspicion of abuse.
Voluntary care - the parents voluntarily agree with the LA to place the child in care as it is in the best interest of the parents/children or both.
Compulsory care - the family or child have no choice about the child being placed in care. It is compulsory as it will be as a result of a court order.
