Meninges Flashcards
Name the 2 layers of dura mater
- Periosteal Layer: attached to skull
2. Meningeal Layer
What is the dura mater comprised of?
Fibroblast-like cells that secrete collagen
Name the 2 flaps of dura mater
Falx Cerebri: btw hemispheres
Tentorium Cerebelli: btw hemispheres and cerebellum
Name the major veins in dura mater and why they’re important
Dural sinuses: bring cerebral blood back to circulation. For reabsorption of CSF
Name the space btw the dura and arachnoid mater
Subdural space
A brain bleed can result in what?
Subdural hematoma: dural sinus damage can cause bleeding into the subdural space and compress the brain
Name the 3 parts of the arachnoid mater and what they do
Arachnoid granulations: collections of arachnoid villi containing unidirectional valves through which CSF passes into venous circulation
Arachnoid trabecula:
Arachnoid membrane:
Name the space btw arachnoid and pia mater
Subarachnoid space: holds CSF
Location of the pia mater
Adheres to cerebral cortex and is the only layer to follow the deep convolutions
Name the vein along the top of the brain
Superior sagittal sinus
Name the space btw cerebral vasculature and cortex
Perivascular space
Name the 5 major subarachnoid cisterns and their locations
- Interpeduncular: in the interpeduncular fossa
- Quadrageminal
- Pontine
- Cistern magna: below cerebellum
- Lumbar
What’s the function of the choroid plexus
Creates CSF from blood plasma
