Meninges Flashcards
What are the layers of the meninges?
Dura mater:
- Periosteal layer
- meningeal layer
Arachnoid mater
Subarachinoid space
Pia mater
What is the Dura mater?
Periosteal layer - attached to bone
Meningeal layer - in contact with arachnoid Mater
What is the arachnoid mater?
Spider resemblance
Lines the dura mater
- trabeculae project from the internal surface across the subarachinoid space, and are continuous with pia mater
What is the subarachinoid space?
Fluid filled space, containing cerebrospinal fluid and blood vessels.
Arachnoid villi resort CSF into venous system.
What is the pia mater?
Membrane attached to surface of brain
As it adheres to brain surface it enters in the sulci of the brain.
What are the dural folds and their function?
What artery supplies the dura and the calvaria?
Middle meningeal artery
Anterior, middle, accessory and posterior
What would cause an extradural hematoma?
Haemorrhage of Anterior middle meningeal artery
What would cause a sub dural hematoma
Haemorrhage of bridging veins between sinus and cerebral vein
What would cause a sub arachinoid hematoma?
Haemorrhage of a cerebral artery within the sub arachinoid space
