Gross Anatomy Of The Brain And Spinal Cord Flashcards
Label the brain. Top right clockwise
Frontal lobe
Temporal lobe
Lateral sulcus
Occipital lobe
Parietal lobe
Central sulcus
What is the structure in green and its function?
Corpus callosum.
Consists of white matter tracts that connect the hemispheres of the brain.
Describe the basic structure of the cerebrum
Cerebrum is split into two hemispheres by a longitudinal fissure
Containes gyri (ridges) thar are separated by sulci
Divided into lobes named after the overlying bone
Describe the cerebellum
The little brain divided into lobes,
Has ridges called folia
What does the brainstem do and what are its components?
Connects the Brain to the spinal cord
Medulla oblongata, pons, midbrain
What 3 areas can the frontal lobe be divided into?
Prefrontal cortex
Motor cortex
Broca’s area
What does the prefrontal cortex do?
Problem solving, complex planning and decision making
Personality
What does the motor cortex do?
Planning, control and execution of voluntary movement
What does Broca’s area do?
Where usually found?
Production of speech
Usually found in left hemisphere
What two sections can the parietal lobe be separated into? What functions does it facilitate?
Primary somatosensory cortex (post central gyrus)
- tactile sensation
Posterior parietal cortex
- integration of sensory information
Spatial perception and attention
- cognitive function
What is somatotopic localisation?
Particular areas of body mapped to a particular part of brain
Case for somatosensory and motor cortex
What are the main functions of the occipital lobe?
Primary visual cortex and visual processing centre of brain
Receives visual info from thalamus
What are the main functions of the temporal lobe? What areas make it up?
Processes sensory info
Auditory cortex
- hearing of speech and words, pitch and tone of music
Wericke’s area
- language comprehension
Long term memory formation, visual perception and recognition, processes olfactory stimuli
What is the insula and its function?
Found deep to the lateral sulcus, concealed by portions of the frontal and temporal and parietal lobes.
Anterior = language
Posterior = integrating information relating to touch, vision and hearing
