What is the pathophysiology of Menieres disease?

A
  • Excessive buildup of endolymph in the labyrinth of the inner ear, causing higher pressure than normal

How does Menieres disease present?

A
  • More common in middle aged women
  • Unilateral episodes of vertigo, tinnitus and hearing loss
  • Feeling of fullness in the ear
  • Episodic attacks can last for 20 minutes to several hours
  • Hearing loss normally is associated with vertigo attacks then becomes more permanent (sensorinueral)

How is MD managed?

A
  • Symptomatic management during the acute attack (prochlorperazine, antihistamines)
  • Prophylaxis with Betahistine
