What is otosclerosis?
A
Remodeling of the small bones in the middle ear leading to conductive hearing loss

What is the pathophysiology of otosclerosis?
A
The tiny bones of the ear (malleus, incus and stapes) are affected by abnormal bone remodelling and formation - mainly base of stapes is affected leading to conductive hearing loss

How does otosclerosis present?
A
- <40 years old patient
- Lower pitched sounds affected more
- tinnitus

How is otosclerosis investigated?
A
- Audiometry which shows conductive hearing loss
- Tympanometry will show redcued admittance of sound
- CT scan can detect bony changes

How is otosclerosis managed?
A
- Conservative with use of hearing aids
- Surgical (stapedectomy/stapedotomy)
