What is otosclerosis?

A

Remodeling of the small bones in the middle ear leading to conductive hearing loss

What is the pathophysiology of otosclerosis?

A

The tiny bones of the ear (malleus, incus and stapes) are affected by abnormal bone remodelling and formation - mainly base of stapes is affected leading to conductive hearing loss

How does otosclerosis present?

A
  • <40 years old patient
  • Lower pitched sounds affected more
  • tinnitus

How is otosclerosis investigated?

A
  • Audiometry which shows conductive hearing loss
  • Tympanometry will show redcued admittance of sound
  • CT scan can detect bony changes

How is otosclerosis managed?

A
  • Conservative with use of hearing aids
  • Surgical (stapedectomy/stapedotomy)
