What is an acoustic neuroma?
A
Benign tumour of the Schwann cells surrounding the vestibulocochlear nerve which innervates the inner ear

Where do acoustic neuromas occur?
A
At the cerebellopontine angle

What are bilateral acoustic neuromas associated with?
A
Neurofibromatosis Type 2

How do acoustic neuromas present?
A
- 40-60 years old
- Unilateral sensorineural hearing loss
- Unilateral tinnitus
- Dizziness
- Vertigo
- Sense of fullness in the ear
- Can be associated with LMN facial palsy

How are acoustic neuromas investigated?
A
- Audiometry
- MRI with gadolinium contrast

How are acoustic neuromas managed?
A
- Conservative if no symptoms
- Surgery to remove tumour
- Radiotherapy to reduce growth of tumour
